Whole Cloth Tree Skirt or Table Topper with J.D. Shumway
It's never too early to get a jump start on the holidays! J.D.'s class this year is her machine quilted Whole Cloth Tree Skirt or Table Topper. The skirt is 42 inches across and there will be two designs to choose from - Holly Leaves & Berries or Fleur de Lis. Class will cover tracing the whole cloth circular design to your fabric, how to handle a large circle, layering & pinning, tips for machine quilting and for applying beautiful bias binding. Intermediate skill level.
LIST OF SUPPLIES
FABRIC: 3 yards 42"/44" 100% cotton in white or ecru. This makes the front, back & binding. Look for cotton sateen or polished cotton if you want skirt/topper to have a sheen. (Quilting will not show on prints.)
BATTING: A very thin batting - cotton or polyester. Purchase enough to cover a 45" square
THREAD: Aurifil 100% cotton or similar good quality thread in color to match fabric. I like to use 50 or 60wt thread for machine quilting
SEWING MACHINE in good working order:
Walking foot (a must)
Darning foot (if you have done free motion quilting)
Schmetz sewing machine needles size 70 or 80
Gloves for machine quilting
Sharp scissors for cutting fabric and paper
Rotary cutter, mat & long ruler
Marking pen or pencil for tracing design to fabric*
Extra light if you need it
*A NOTE ABOUT MARKING PENS Everyone has their favorite pen or pencil for marking fabric. Bring it or look for something that will give you a fine, light line. You do not need to see the marks from 8 feet away in the dark! Test it on an edge of your fabric to make sure it comes out using manufacturer's directions.

Liberated Starsa la Gwen Marston with Beth Parker
Gwen Marston is a famous Michigan quilter who created a way to "liberate" traditional quilt patterns. One of my favorites is her liberated stars pattern. This is a fun, easy way to make star blocks that look spectacular. They can be made in your favorite types of fabric and in any size without much math. Come join this class for a totally liberating experience.
The amount of fabric you will need depends on the quilt size you wish to make. The class quilt is lap size and fabric amounts reflect that. Adjust as necessary for your chosen size. A finished block is a 9" square.
LIST OF SUPPLIES:
1/2 to 3/4 yard background fabric, for a scrappy background, yardage equal to 1/2 plus yards
4 to 8 fat quarters, or one charm pack, or all scrap fabric equal to 1 to 2 yards, that contrast with the background fabric. This amount is to give you lots of options in your choice of star point fabrics
One fat quarter if you want all the star points the same, this fabric could also be used as your border, if so you would need one yard
61/2" square up ruler
Small cutting mat if you have one
Rotary Cutter-there will be large cutting boards and long rulers for you to use
You will also need your sewing machine in good working order, the foot pedal, extension cord, Ott light or other portable light if you need it to sew, new sewing machine needle, extra bobbins pre wound with your choice of thread, ¼”sewing machine foot or way to sew an exact ¼” seam. A flannel backed table cloth to use as a design area when arranging your blocks.
